To introduce BGS US to Pittsburgh, Managing Director Andreas Ostrowicki and General Manager Leonard Zuba recently appeared on Our Region’s Business. The weekly TV program is hosted by Bill Flanagan of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development.

We told Bill that, after seeing dozens of potential sites in a number of cities, we chose one near the Pittsburgh International Airport to build our US headquarters and operations center, and first location outside of Germany.  The 100,000-square-foot plant will offer fully automated, cutting-edge, electron beam (E-Beam) sterilization services by mid-2025.

Gamma irradiation and ethylene oxide (EtO) treatment have historically been the most widely used sterilization techniques in the U.S. However, recent supply chain issues related to Cobalt-60 and uncertainties about the environmental risks of EtO are increasing demand for alternatives such as E-Beam sterilization.

We selected the Pittsburgh region because of its proximity to customers in the Northeast, Midwest, and South, convenient access to a major airport and highways, talent at excellent universities, including Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh, and health sciences clusters that have formed largely because of those institutions.

When we announced our U.S. expansion plans earlier this year, the response from potential customers and team members was overwhelming. We attribute this reception to the fact that the US is the world’s largest market for medical devices and to our state-of-the-art E-Beam technology. In the manufacturing process of medical devices, pharmaceutical primary packaging and biotechnology products, E-Beam sterilization can be a safe and efficient alternative to other sterilization methods.
